Alibaba launches new AI chip trying to meet the AI demand

Alibaba wants to change that.
The company just introduced its XuanTie C950 chip, and it’s not just another experiment. This is a clear step toward building its own AI backbone without relying on U.S. technology.
The C950 comes out of Alibaba’s Damo Academy and uses RISC-V, an open chip architecture. That matters because it lets Alibaba and its customers customize performance for specific AI tasks instead of being locked into someone else’s design.
AI training gets all the headlines, but inference is where the money is. Training happens once. Inference runs every time a user asks a question, clicks a recommendation, or interacts with an AI tool. That constant usage is what drives revenue.
Alibaba is building this chip specifically for that high-volume, money-making side of AI.
This isn’t a one-off launch either. CEO Eddie Wu says the company’s in-house AI accelerators are already in mass production. Alibaba is putting together a full stack that runs from chips all the way to apps.
Its chip unit, T-Head, could even be spun off, which hints at a bigger ambition. Alibaba isn’t just trying to compete. They are trying to control their entire AI pipeline in China and then sell that ecosystem beyond its borders.
If it works, that could weaken the grip that Western chip giants have on the global AI market. And that’s something investors shouldn’t ignore.

If a closed system adds even $1 in licensing or royalties per CPU, then deploying 5 million inference CPUs would cost $5,000,000. Removing that cost lets Alibaba lower prices to win customers. In cloud computing, the cheapest cost per AI response often wins.
Inference compute is expected to grow 3x to 5x faster than training over the next few years. Training is expensive and centralized. Inference is everywhere. Every chatbot reply, recommendation, or AI action runs on inference.
Alibaba is positioning the C950 right at that layer. Not the headline-grabbing models, but the massive everyday execution layer where billions of queries happen. That’s where margins stabilize and scale takes over.
Customization is the second strike. Nvidia sells general-purpose performance. Alibaba is offering workload-specific tuning. That can cut costs by 20% to 40% for large deployments. For cloud customers running millions of AI queries per day, that’s a major difference.
Then there’s the ecosystem play. If Alibaba succeeds, it won’t just sell chips. It will lock customers into its cloud, its AI tools, and eventually its devices. Think smart glasses, laptops, and AI agents like OpenClaw. This is vertical integration built for China’s market.
And don’t ignore the timing. China is accelerating RISC-V adoption fast. Government support plus corporate scale means this is moving beyond experimentation. It’s becoming a national strategy tied to real demand.

First, look for large Chinese cloud customers shifting inference workloads to RISC-V systems. If Alibaba can show even a 25% cost advantage, adoption could move quickly. Switching cloud providers is hard, but not hard enough to ignore that level of savings.
Second, track T-Head’s potential listing. A public chip unit would reveal revenue, margins, and customer concentration. Strong numbers would validate the strategy and pressure competitors.
Third, watch Nvidia’s pricing in Asia. If Alibaba and others create real alternatives, Nvidia may cut prices or push harder on software lock-in. Either way, its dominance would weaken.
Finally, watch software compatibility. Hardware alone doesn’t win. If Alibaba makes RISC-V easy for developers to use, adoption speeds up. If it doesn’t, growth slows.
This isn’t just about one chip. It’s the beginning of a whole separate AI hardware stack that doesn’t depend on Western control. And once that system gets good enough, even if it’s not perfect, the competitive landscape can shift really fast.
