That might sound like a small product update. It’s not.


In generative AI, your chat history is your switching cost. The more an assistant knows about your writing style, your business, your coding projects, your preferences, the harder it is to leave. Anthropic just blew up that barrier. If users can port years of context into Claude at zero cost, loyalty becomes optional.


This is a direct shot at OpenAI and Google. Both companies have relied on ecosystem lock in to defend their lead. Anthropic is attacking that advantage head on by making migration frictionless.


And the timing matters.


Free active users have reportedly jumped more than 60 percent. Daily signups have tripled since late 2025, with growth accelerating into January. AI models are converging in quality. Most people don’t realize how much better AI got in just a year, and GPT 4 class systems are now good enough for most use cases.
