Apple (AAPL) plans to use Google’s (GOOGL) Gemini artificial intelligence technology to support key AI features, including Siri, beginning later this year.
Apple shares rose about 1 percent in U.S. morning trading after the decision was reported. The report said the partnership follows a competitive review of available AI systems.
Apple said it selected Google because Gemini best fit the company’s long-term AI plans. Apple described the model as the strongest foundation for its internal AI efforts.
The company said Google’s technology will support Apple Foundation Models. These are large AI systems trained on vast amounts of data to perform tasks such as understanding language, generating responses, and assisting with everyday requests. They sit behind features like voice assistants and text tools.
Apple said the Gemini model will help unlock new experiences for users across its products. The company did not provide details on specific features or timelines beyond confirming the rollout would begin later this year.
Apple has been working to upgrade Siri, its voice assistant introduced in 2011. Siri handles tasks such as answering questions, setting reminders, and controlling devices. The upgrade is expected to improve accuracy and allow more complex requests.
Apple previously reported that it was planning to rely on Google’s Gemini model as part of that Siri overhaul. The report highlighted Apple’s decision to use an external partner rather than build all AI capabilities in-house.
Google’s Gemini is one of several advanced AI models currently used across consumer and enterprise products. It competes with systems developed by other major technology companies.
The partnership also aligned with earlier forecasts from Wedbush Securities. The firm’s research team, led by analyst Dan Ives, had listed an Apple-Google AI agreement as one of its top technology predictions for 2026.
Further details about how Gemini will be integrated into Apple’s products have not yet been disclosed.
