Google`s Gemini AI is coming to your Gmail
Google (GOOGL) is adding new Gemini artificial intelligence features to Gmail, expanding the use of AI across its email service, the company said Thursday.
The updates include AI-generated summaries of long email threads and automated response suggestions. Some of the features will be enabled by default, requiring users to opt out if they do not want them.
Google said the rollout will happen in phases. Availability will vary as the tools are gradually introduced to inboxes.
The company said Gmail can now generate summaries when users open emails with many replies. The summaries are designed to condense conversations into key points displayed at the top of a thread.
Google said AI Overviews, a feature already used in search results, are also being added to Gmail. The company did not specify when all users will see the changes.
The updates are part of Google’s broader effort to embed its Gemini AI technology across consumer products. The company is expanding AI features as competition increases in the generative AI market.
Google said Gmail now has more than 3 billion users worldwide. The large user base is a central part of the company’s strategy as it rolls out AI-powered tools.
Last year, Google added Gemini capabilities to Gmail that allowed users to search messages, draft emails from prompts, improve grammar and generate custom responses. The new updates build on those earlier features.
One addition is an upgraded “Suggested Replies” tool. Google said it uses the context of a user’s emails to generate one-click responses. The feature replaces an earlier version known as “Smart Replies.”
Google is also enhancing a proofreading tool that checks grammar and helps make messages more concise. The company said the option is designed to improve clarity and tone in outgoing emails.
The announcement comes amid strong performance by Google’s parent company, Alphabet. Alphabet’s market value surpassed Apple’s this week for the first time since 2019, extending a rally driven by advances in artificial intelligence.
The broader AI market has seen rapid growth. OpenAI reached a private market valuation of $500 billion late last year, while Anthropic said it is valued at $350 billion following a new funding round.
