Pebble introduced a smart ring that records short voice notes through an onboard microphone. The Index 01 marks the company’s move into a new product category after its return earlier this year.
The ring launches at $75 and is available for preorder. Shipments begin in March, when the price rises to $99. The device is similar in size to a wedding band and is sold in polished gold, polished silver and matte black finishes.
The Index 01 omits health sensors, setting it apart from higher-priced competitors. A button on the band must be held to start recordings, which are saved to internal storage before being transferred to a smartphone over Bluetooth.
Recorded audio is converted to text and processed by a local large language model that can create notes or reminders. Pebble will offer optional cloud speech-to-text services and backups. The company says the app is open source to allow inspection of its privacy measures.
Pebble states that the battery can operate for years without charging but cannot be replaced. The ring must be recycled once the battery degrades. The device carries a 30-day warranty and is water resistant to one meter for routine exposure such as handwashing or showers.
Founder Eric Migicovsky said the concept emerged after he failed to find similar hardware during a visit to Shenzhen. He noted that hobbyists will be able to modify the device to add functions like pausing music or triggering a phone camera.
