Trump launches ‘Genesis Mission’ to boost AI use

President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order creating the “Genesis Mission,” a government-wide initiative intended to expand the use of artificial intelligence and speed scientific progress.

White House officials said the mission will coordinate AI research across federal agencies and increase the use of advanced computing tools in government projects. Michael Kratsios, director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, told reporters the effort is designed to integrate agency work and accelerate breakthroughs.

The plan will draw on the Department of Energy’s national laboratories. Kratsios said their computing systems and access to federal datasets will support new experiments that rely on AI. He said the approach could shorten the time needed to reach scientific discoveries.

A senior administration official said partnerships with private companies, including Nvidia, Dell Technologies, HPE and Advanced Micro Devices, will add supercomputing capacity at federal labs. The official said recent announcements from those firms illustrate the type of collaborations the government hopes to expand.

Officials said the mission is expected to drive advances in materials research, health science and energy. They said the work aligns with the administration’s efforts to boost production and help ease costs for consumers.

Kratsios said the country stands “on the brink of a scientific revolution” due to AI. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the initiative also targets concerns about rising energy costs at a time when AI data centers place heavy demands on the electric grid.

Wright said the plan aims to improve grid efficiency and increase energy supply. He said the goal is to halt rising electricity prices before pushing them lower.

The Energy Department previewed the initiative earlier this month. Chief of Staff Carl Coe compared the administration’s AI ambitions to the space race and the Manhattan Project. Kratsios on Monday described the new effort as the largest federal science mobilization since the Apollo program.

Trump has promoted AI development as a national priority. His administration has pursued executive actions to reduce regulatory barriers for companies building data centers and supplying key hardware. He has also pushed for a single federal standard and is preparing an order that would allow the Justice Department to sue states over AI rules it views as unconstitutional.
