The biggest AI company OpenAI on Wednesday announced the launch of ChatGPT Health, a new experience designed to let users securely connect medical records and wellness apps to its chatbot.

The company said the feature is meant to help users navigate everyday health and wellness questions. It is not intended for diagnosis or treatment and is not designed to replace medical care.

ChatGPT Health aims to make responses more relevant by grounding them in a user’s own health information. OpenAI said the tool will function as a support resource rather than a clinical service.

Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s chief executive of applications, said in a Substack post that the launch represents another step toward turning ChatGPT into a personal assistant that can support users across different areas of life.

OpenAI said ChatGPT Health operates in a dedicated space within the chatbot. Files, conversations and connected apps are stored separately from other chats.

Information and memories from ChatGPT Health will not flow outside that space, the company said. Conversations in ChatGPT Health will not be used to train OpenAI’s foundation models.

The company said it has partnered with b.well to provide the health data connectivity infrastructure. The partnership will allow users to share medical records with the chatbot.

Users will also be able to connect data from Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers and the lab testing startup Function, among others. Services can be linked through tools or app settings.

OpenAI said ChatGPT Health was developed in close collaboration with physicians. The company has increased its focus on health care in recent months.

After launching its GPT-5 model in August, OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman told CNBC that health care may be the area showing the strongest improvement among use cases.

In May, OpenAI released Health Bench, a benchmark designed to measure how well artificial intelligence models perform in realistic health scenarios.

The company said hundreds of millions of people ask health and wellness questions each week.

ChatGPT Health will initially be available to a small group of early users. OpenAI said it plans to expand access in the coming weeks as it gathers feedback and refines the experience.
