US or China? Who wins the fusion power race
Global geopolitical analysts continue to debate whether the United States and China are in a Cold War or a broader contest for global dominance.
Some analysts argue the distinction is not decisive. They say China seeks to dominate the 21st century and is prepared to use all available tools to do so.
These observers also contend Beijing would act only after concluding the United States is unwilling to commit its armed forces to defend Taiwan. Taiwan is described as producing most of the world’s computer chips, including the most advanced models.
Some analysts link China’s future military posture in the Pacific Rim to its progress in nuclear fusion energy. They argue Chinese confidence in deploying force would be strengthened by breakthroughs in fusion power.
Fusion energy is described as a source of clean, inexpensive, and virtually unlimited electricity. Analysts say such energy could support major advances in artificial intelligence.
China’s fusion efforts are believed to be receiving massive state investment. An executive at Brookhaven National Laboratory was quoted as saying the true scale of Chinese spending is unknown due to secrecy, but appears driven by a “whatever it takes” approach.
Analysts emphasize that artificial intelligence is widely seen as capable of reshaping national power. They note that realizing its full potential requires enormous energy resources.
In this view, fusion power would transform artificial intelligence into a strategic asset. Energy production and computing capacity are described as tightly linked.
The United States did not prioritize fusion for many years. That approach reportedly shifted in late 2025. The White House created an Office of Fusion within the Department of Energy to elevate attention on the technology.
The recent $6 billion merger involving President Donald J. Trump’s social media company and fusion firm TAE Technologies, describes the move as signaling belief that leadership in fusion will shape national power.
History may judge investments in fusion energy as decisive in determining future global outcomes.
