Lucid moves into self-driving with Nvidia

Lucid Group (LCID) plans to launch a mid-size electric vehicle with Level 4 self-driving, powered by Nvidia’s (NVDA) DRIVE AGX Thor platform. This new car will be smaller and cheaper than the Lucid Air. It marks Lucid’s move beyond luxury cars into affordable autonomy for everyday buyers.

Lucid claims its self-driving is superior to Tesla’s

Lucid’s next model will compete with Tesla’s (TSLA) Model Y and Rivian’s (RIVN) R2. The company says it will use cameras, radar, and lidar together — unlike Tesla’s camera-only setup — to reach Level 4 automation. This means the car could drive itself in most conditions without help from the driver.

By using Nvidia’s AI computing system, Lucid expects to make both its vehicles and factories smarter. The same chips that process driving data will also power its production systems, helping improve efficiency and reduce waste. Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Lucid sees this launch as key to its next stage of EV innovation.

AI automation represent the next wave of EV adoption

This move is more than a new car — it’s about bringing autonomous driving to the mass market. Level 4 automation is still rare today, limited by high costs and regulations. But Lucid’s use of Nvidia’s scalable platform could help speed up adoption.

We see this as part of a wider trend where AI computing and vehicle design come together. Modern cars are becoming powerful computers on wheels. Companies that control both the hardware and the software — like Nvidia for chips and Lucid for system integration — may lead the next era of smart mobility.

This strategy could also open doors for Lucid in ride-hailing, delivery, and subscription-based mobility, where self-driving tech is essential. The company’s ties with Uber (UBER) and Nuro suggest it’s already moving in that direction.

Is Tesla in trouble?

For investors, Lucid’s Nvidia-powered shift brings both opportunity and risk. If it works, Lucid could transform its image from a luxury EV maker into a major AI mobility player. That would also strengthen Nvidia’s hold in the auto industry, where its chips already appear in cars from Mercedes-Benz and BYD.

Tesla’s software-first model now faces a challenge from Lucid’s sensor-rich and AI-driven approach. Rivian may need to add more autonomy features while keeping costs down. General Motors (GM), which recently scaled back its Cruise division after safety issues, could fall behind.

We see the news as modestly bullish for Nvidia, cautiously positive for Lucid, and a warning sign for Tesla. It’s no longer the only player in self-driving.
