Waymo said Wednesday it will begin manual test drives of its robotaxi vehicles in Baltimore, Pittsburgh and St. Louis. The move adds three new locations to the Alphabet-owned company’s expanding network of markets for autonomous services.

The company said the cities join a roster of 26 markets where it is operating robotaxis, preparing to launch service or conducting early-stage testing. Manual driving in the new locations starts this week. A spokesperson said the goal is to advance toward fully autonomous rides in each market.

Waymo has increased the pace of its announcements in recent weeks. The company is moving as rivals Amazon and Tesla expand their own robotaxi efforts in 2025. Amazon’s Zoox unit has begun offering free rides in Las Vegas and San Francisco. Tesla has launched a ride-hailing service with human supervisors in Austin and San Francisco.

Waymo outlined additional market activity in November. It said it will soon start manual driving in Minneapolis, Tampa and New Orleans. It also added Houston, San Antonio and Orlando to the list of cities slated for service launches in 2026. The company recently began offering freeway rides in the San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix regions. It also named a new finance chief as part of the broader expansion.

Waymo’s paid robotaxi operations now span Austin, the San Francisco Bay Area, Phoenix, Atlanta and Los Angeles. The company said it completes more than 250,000 paid trips each week. In May it reported delivering more than 10 million paid rides since its 2020 launch.

The addition of Baltimore, Pittsburgh and St. Louis extends testing into regions with colder climates. Waymo said the expansion shows growing confidence that its vehicles can perform safely and consistently in varying weather conditions.
